Abstract Service industry becomes more and more important in the information-oriented economy. Service industry plays a key role in the transformation of economic growth pattern and the upgrade of industrial structure. Since the reform and opening-up, service industry has develped rapidly in China.
This paper analyzes the basic characteristics of the develoment of Chinese service industry from the following aspects:development phase, growth pattern, internal structure and regional disequilibrium. The development of Chinese service industry undergoes three phases since 1980s. The proportion of value-added service and employment of Chinese service industry is lower than that of other countries' in the world. In terms of internal structure, traditional service industry takes a dominant proportion. Furthermore, the article explores the inter-regional, intra-regional and inter-provincial disparity of the development of Chinese service industry. On the whole, regional disparity of the development of Chinese service industry becomes greater at a higher speed. Intra-regional disparity, especially disparity in the eastern areas, is the main factor of regional disparity.
